Many spiritual teachers have said that as you practice staying in the thought-free present moment more and more, your power of presence will grow, and it will become easier and easier to be still.
This also means being what you actually are–the still presence before all of the thought-form programs start to run amuck.
But staying in presence doesn’t just mean sitting in meditation.
In fact, after getting up from your meditation, it is helpful to take this level of mindfulness with you throughout your daily activities.
Because it’s one thing to be calm, present, and loving in a space of peace when you’re listening to calming music and focusing on your breath, but staying present in the line at the bank, grocery store, or when someone with road rage is honking their horn aggressively at you for taking your time at an intersection is a whole other story.
You can start building yourself up to stay present, compassionate and mindful in even the most stressful situations by starting easy.
Here are some suggestions for some really easy places and situations to start practicing mindfulness and staying more and more still and detached from the busy, egoic mind:
1: 💧 When filling a glass of water. Watch the water pour and see if you can remain completely present during.
2: 👏 When washing your hands. Can you remain completely present and not daydream during the entirety of the activity?
3: 🗣️ When listening to someone speak to you. Can you stay present and truly listen without just waiting to interject with your own thoughts?
These are but a few examples.
I guess looking at these examples, we could say, “Spirituality is SO boring…”
But why not make it a game and see how present you can stay during the little things in life?
Because this will have a compounding effect and not only enhance your meditation practice, but every little helps, and will help you stay mindful in daily life.
Before you know it, you will be so much more able to stay calm in stressful situations, around toxic people, and at generally protecting your energy.
Happy mindfulness practice,
