Staying present
Staying present

Several days ago, I had finished running some errands and decided to take a seat on a public bench.

As I took a few minutes to myself, I entered into a light meditation and silently enjoyed the breeze through the trees, the birds flying by, and the rays of the sun on my skin.

A few individuals walked by and saw me, and I got the sense that they almost thought I was strange or unusual for sitting silently, enjoying my surroundings.

And the hilarious thing is, if I had my nose buried in my cell phone, then none of them would have even taken notice or probably noticed I was there at all!

In fact, they probably would have considered it completely normal that someone is sitting on a bench absorbed by a phone but would be mind-boggled that someone is paying attention to the three-dimensional reality around them.

This amused me so much that I started to think to myself, “So many of us seem to be permanently locked into technology and screens without taking a second to become mindful of what is actually in front of us."

If we take just a moment to “lock in” to the present moment and ignore the busy thinking mind and the rampage of notifications from endless apps, then we enter a totally different space of being altogether.

One where our reactions are from a place unobscured by our beliefs, traumas, and ideologies and where our interactions are from a place of purity and non-agenda.

In fact, many spiritual teachers claim that the moment you are present, you begin to heal, you are met with a detachment from your thinking mind so you can witness the unhelpful cognitive and emotional loops, and you may even be met with incredible realizations and insights that were not available to you prior.

In my opinion, this sure beats 5 minutes of playing Candy Crush or Angry Birds.

An added bonus to this is that you have a permanent way to weird out strangers in public–oh, the joy!

This message is just a friendly reminder to stay present, even if everyone in the world thinks you are weird for not being glued to a cell phone!

Love and light,
